About this track

In the same way “Speechless” is my version of Robin Holcomb’s “So Straight and Slow”, “Restraint” is my version of Dr.StrangeLove’s “Dolly”. Dr.StrangeLove is a Japanese indie rock duo who performed on and produced pretty much all of Cocco’s albums. The chorus, though, references a different source — BBMak.

The lyrics for “Restraint” are somewhat autobiographical. I’m far too reserved, and I could probably do well to exercise less restraint every so often.

It's just a notion
A strange idea of how it could be
If I could learn how to lose control

It's what could happen
If I let go my inhibitions
I just might learn to be loved again

But if I release the anger in me
Everything burns up in flames
I could never live if I destroyed
What is dear to me
I don't think I'd be
What you want of me
If I lose control

It's just an ocean
That separates the past from present
And I don't want to be there again

It's what could happen
If I let go my best intentions
I'll free myself to be loved again

But I don't know what it takes
To live a life not driven by my fears
How can I replace all that I know now
With something new
Something else that's true
I could start with you
And lose my control

I know I must take a step to make it right
I'm not that brave just yet
But if I replace all that I know now
With something new
It will all be true
I can't start with you
But I'll lose control
