About this track
Unlike the previous three tracks, “Our Best Wasn’t Enough” is much more recent song. I plucked out the chord progression back in 2003, but I didn’t flesh it out till late 2004 and early 2005.
ACO’s absolute ego was a big influence on the writing and recording of Imprint, and “Our Best Wasn’t Enough” takes more than a few ideas from “Yorokobi ni Saku Hana”. I keep thinking I ought to do more with the arrangement of this song, but anything I added just seemed extraneous. So I’m keeping it as is.
Around the time I wrote the lyrics, I knew quite a number of people going through break-ups at the same time. So I tried to write from their perspective.
Lyrics
Maybe I can change your mind
Tell you things you want to hear
But we'd know it's just a lie
In the end, it's what we fear to face
This time, the dream comes to an end
We both believed this moment
Was a time we'd never reach
But we've got both eyes open
We're awakened to the truth of what has been
We did our best
It's not enough
Who am I to disagree?
Would it change a thing at all?
Should I keep the door unlocked
If you choose to throw away the key
To what was once a place of hope?
And if you ever look back
To the times we used to share
Would you remember wanting
Nothing more than I could ever give to you?
We did our best
It's not enough
And if I ever look back
To the times I shared with you
I wouldn't change a thing
Even all the points that brought us where we are
We took a risk
It's all we had
We did our best
It wasn't not enough
We took a risk
It's all that we had
