Hear the Wind Sing

About this track

To be perfectly honest, the main reason I wrote this song was to get a guy I had a crush on in college to sing it. But he was too busy to do it, and I had written it far too out of my range to sing it myself.

I intended to submit it for a concert of works by student composers, but I never got around to getting together performers to play it. I also considered submitting it for the Duran Duran tribute album, Glue, since Arcadia’s “Lady Ice” was an inspiration, but I couldn’t get that together either. Ah, well.

The first draft was recorded on an old Tascam 4-track recorder, but the masters for that version were stolen in a burglary. So I had to reconstruct it from the only surviving recording I had on an old cassette tape. I bounceed a lot of tracks on that 4-track to get all the elements to come together, so it’s not surprising the reconstructed digital version uses a good 30 or so tracks. I also had to transpose it to fit my own limited vocal range.

At the time I wrote the song, I had just read an English translation of Haruki Murakami’s “Hear the Wind Sing”. So I took a few of the images from that book and fashioned them into lyrics.

This song is so far the most complex thing I’ve recorded. My computer tends to buckle every time I open up the Cakewalk SONAR file to edit it!

P.S. The version here on the site is slightly different from the one distributed to retailers. It has a bit more “content”.

Lyrics

Hear the wind sing
Hear it whisper
Words and time are gone
Lost, forgotten

No one has a hold on strength
It's the same for everybody
The more I lose, the less I gain
I guess I'd be much better this way

Hear the wind sing
"Time flies like an arrow"
Hear it laughing
"Call me what you want to"

Voices in my head are calling
Hold me now, I'm feeling cold
Recognize the gulf between us
I'd use a yardstick anyway

Hear the wind sing
Feel it linger

I won't forgive those still alive
I'd take my pillow and go to bed
I guess that's just the way I am
Happy Birthday and White Christmas

Hear the wind sing
