About this track

“Choices” is the other song, in addition to “Late Thaw”, that was written and recorded to fill the album out.

Something about the minimal harmonic rhythm and bass line of Sade’s “Paradise” appeals to me, but I think the bass rhythm is about as close as I get to that song.

The melody, of course, is far more difficult than my limited abilities can handle. It’s got some really low notes and one pretty high one. The original draft of this song was in a key beyond my range, so I had to transpose it for this recording. (That’s the case for a lot of these songs.)

I have no idea what the lyrics are about. My method of lyric writing is to fit some words to the first few measures of the melody. Whatever that line suggests becomes the basis for the other lines to follow. So I wrote “Yesterday was something different from before”, liked it and took it from there.

Yesterday was something different from before
Yesterday was nothing new
Now you're waiting for the change that never comes
Never mind it happened not so long ago

Yesterday I was the reason you remained
Now today you're all but gone
I don't need to wait for you to change your mind
I'll decide it on my own

And all the time that had passed
And all the time that remains
It won't stop you from the choice
You have to make when I'm no longer by your side

Yesterday you told me you would think it out
Yesterday you went ahead
Now the change you wanted comes without a price
But I still pay it all the same

With all the time that is gone
With all the time that remains
It won't stop me from the choice
I have to make when you're no longer by my side

Call it circumstance how fate intervenes
But you decide it's coincidence
And I'll buy your lies

With all the time that has passed
With all the time that remains
It won't stop you from choosing
When and where or how it all turns out

And all this time that is gone
And all this time that remains
It won't stop me from the choice that I make
When you're not right here
Right by my side
