About this track
“A Simple Song” is something of an intended misnomer. I wanted to write a two-voice piano piece with a tonal melody and a dissonant accompaniment.
I’ve always been fascinated by the way jazz pianist Wayne Horvitz can come up with hooks but set them to very idiomatic chord progressions. So I had Horvitz in mind as I worked on this piece.
At some point, I thought, “What would it sound like if it were arranged for instruments?” The clarinet and cello samples in Propellerhead Reason are fairly decent, so I plugged them into the score instead.
I would like to hear a real clarinet and cello play this piece in the future, but I think I like it more as a chamber work than a solo piano piece.
