Love and Pride

About this track

Some Japanese pop artists like to throw in a token rock song on an album, similar to what Janet Jackson did with “Black Cat” on Rhythm Nation 1814. I wanted that same contrast, and I wrote “Love and Pride” for such a purpose.

I think Cocco’s “Mizukagami” had a big influence on how this song turned out.

Back in 2005, the conservative political agenda was starting to run ridiculously amok, and it was difficult to avoid. So I wrote the lyrics in an attempt to see through that perspective. It would be really funny if this song turned into some conservative rock anthem, because the tone is actually quite mocking.

I don’t like the vocals I recorded for this song either. I need to be more careful about using the right vowel on long notes — too many lines of this song put “ih” and “eh” on long notes. It should be obvious I have trouble with long notes.

Lyrics

Can you feel it? A change about to come
Can you sense it? Uncertainty of what's ahead
A chance to turn the hands of fate
Back to a time when nothing was in doubt

Do you feel it? A chance to right the wrongs
Do you want it? Security and peace of mind
A bedrock of our moral ground
A certainty in what we know is true

Damn the ones who want to change our ways
Give me freedom, and all my love and pride
Will be yours

A chance to fix what didn't break
A chance to right what isn't wrong
A chance to fight for sanctity
Of truth we've held for oh so long
A chance to turn the hands of fate
Back to a time when nothing was in doubt

Is it dream, or is it memory?
Take me back now, and all my love and pride
Will be yours
